The 10 big giant mobile phone companies Nokia, Texas Instruments, Apple, LG, Samsung, NEC, Motorola, Qualcomm, Research in Motion (RIM), and Sony Ericsson has submitted Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to the EU Commission on Monday, which is accepted and signed by the companies. According to that agreement these companies are going to introduce a single standard charger for all mobile phones.
Right now there are approximately 30 different mobile phone chargers are used by European mobile phone users. So, according to this agreement the new charger will be available in 2010 for EU mobile users. This decision is defiantly great, the new single charger will reduce the burden of a mobile phone user because they don’t need anymore to keep different chargers to charge their different mobile devices with them. On the other hand this will also reduce the electric material waste and cut the cost when mobile phone retailers will sale the mobile phones without chargers.
These 10 mobile phone companies covers the 90% of the European mobile market. So, approximately 350 – 400 million users across the Europe would be covered by this change which is a huge number of users.
On this event EU Industry Commissioner Guenter Verheugen said that they wish to expand this single charger project for for all other remaining mobile phones, digital cameras and laptops.
